Description
Cook's Cottage was originally built in 1755 and is the oldest building in Australia. It is heritage listed and now presides in the Fitzroy Gardens in East Melbourne, Victoria.
The cottage was delivered to Australia from Yorkshire, England by Sir Russell Grimwade in 1934. The cottage had to be carefully dismantled and each brick was then individually numbered and was then packed in barrels, and shipped to Australia. Now the cottage is a popular tourist attraction with the inner workings of the cottage laid out as if you were there back in that time period. Tour guides greet you in period costumes and explain what life would have been like, living in the cottage of those days.
